Why the Return Side Needs Self-Aligning Idlers

The return side of a belt conveyor carries no material load, but belt misalignment on the return side can still cause serious problems. A wandering belt rubs against conveyor structure, damaging belt edges and creating safety hazards. Return side misalignment also accelerates wear on return idlers and can lead to belt folding or twisting.

How Tapered Return Idlers Work

The idler set consists of a central roller and two tapered end rollers mounted on a pivoting frame. When the belt drifts off-center, the tapered rollers create a differential friction force. The belt contacts the tapered section on the side toward which it is drifting. This contact generates a steering force that guides the belt back to the center. The pivoting frame allows the entire assembly to swing, enhancing the corrective action.

Custom Design Options

Belt width determines the overall length of the idler set. Standard belt widths from 500 mm to 2400 mm are accommodated. Roller diameter is selected based on belt speed. Larger diameters reduce rotational speed and extend bearing life. Wall thickness is chosen according to expected impact and load conditions.

Component Selection

Bearings are sized according to calculated loads. Seal configuration depends on environmental conditions. Simple labyrinth seals handle clean, dry environments. Multi-stage seals with added contact elements protect against fine dust. For wet or washdown conditions, water-resistant seals are available.

The pivot mechanism uses sealed, self-lubricating bearings to ensure free movement without frequent maintenance. The pivot must respond quickly to belt movement while withstanding continuous vibration.

Surface Protection

Idler sets receive surface protection based on operating environment. Standard paint suits indoor, dry applications. Electro-galvanized coating provides corrosion resistance for humid conditions. Hot-dip galvanizing protects against severe outdoor, marine, or chemical exposure.
